A 17-member team from the Prosthetics and Orthotics Training College (POTC) in Nsawam visited the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital on Tuesday October 30, 2018.
The team included: 15 final year students and two lecturers. This is second time students from the college are visiting FOCOS on an educational tour. Their overall objective for this visit was to observe how the orthotics department in FOCOS function and also get practical training on the use of equipment.
Nii Addy Kpani the Orthopedic Technician at the hospital took the team on a departmental tour where they interacted with staff. Mr. Nartey Addo Felix the lecturer who led the team recounted his experience when he first visited the hospital as a student, “I was amazed when I saw a world class facility like this in Ghana”.
He further commended FOCOS for adding a children’s block, an educational center and an MRI machine to enhance the provision of quality healthcare for patients.
POTC provides concise theoretical and practical prosthetics and orthotics education in Ghana. They also have a research and development capacity, to enhance evidence-based service and modern technology in assistive devices for persons with physical and mobility disability and patients with orthopedic needs.
Currently, POTC aims at upgrading and developing the existing capacity of the Orthopedic Training Centre (OTC) at Nsawam into a sub-regional referral and resource center for Prosthetic and Orthotic services.
