Prof. Emeritus Oheneba Boachie-Adjei headlines SICOT World Congress

The President and Founder of FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital Prof. Emeritus Boachie-Adjei, will speak on the topic Making state of the art orthopaedic and spine care sustainable in underserved regions: The FOCOS Paradigm. One man’s journey and how it was done at the 38th SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress slated for Thursday 30th November to Saturday 2nd of December in Cape Town. 

Prof. Boachie-Adjei completed his undergraduate studies at Brooklyn College where he received a Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) in 1976. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1980.  In 1986, he was a John H. Moe fellow in spine deformity at the Twin Cities Scoliosis Center and Minnesota Spine Center in Minneapolis, where his teachers included Doctors John Lonstein and Robert Winter.

Prof. Boachie-Adjei is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of the Scoliosis Service at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). He is an Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at both HSS and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. As Chief of the Scoliosis Service at HSS, he has special expertise in the treatment of scoliosis, kyphosis and spine reconstruction in both adult and pediatric patients.

He was Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota (19871990); Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Southern California (1990-1994) and Assistant Clinical Professor, University of California College of Medicine, Irvine (1993-1994). His clinical appointments included the position of Associate Medical Director at the Southern California Complex Spine and Scoliosis Center in Whittier (1990-1994).

Prof. Boachie-Adjei has published and lectured extensively on spine surgery, with special emphasis on surgery to correct spine deformity. He is an inventor who holds several patents for devices used in spine surgery.  He received the Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) in 2004, and received the Blount Award (Humanitarian) from the Scoliosis Research Society in 2006. He was elected President of the Scoliosis Research Society for the 2008-2009 year and was featured in the Discovery channel documentary entitled, “Surgery Saved My Life.” Prof. Boachie-Adjei received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Hospital for Special Surgery in June 2013. In 2015, he was featured on CNN’s African Voices documentary as the “Ghanaian Doctor Transforming spine surgery in Ghana”. Prof Boachie-Adjei was recognized for his contribution towards orthopedic healthcare delivery in the world, at the “Dream Makers” gal held on August 19, 2017 and received the award for Individual Philanthropist of the Year (Special Needs), at the 2017 edition of the Philanthropy Forum.

Also, present to speak at this year’s SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress are Fares Haddad a Professor of Orthopaedic and Sports Surgery and Divisional Clinical Director of Surgical Specialties at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and Ashok N. Johari a Paediatric Orthopaedic and Spine surgeon based in Mumbai. Fares Haddad doubles as the Director of the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) at University College London. He is also Editor in Chief of the Bone and Joint Journal (formerly JBJS-Br).

Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT) is an international non-profit association aiming to advance orthopaedics and traumatology globally and develop teaching, research and education. The SICOT Foundation was formed in 1990 to manage funds donated for the purpose of helping SICOT achieve its research and educational goals. The Foundation has not only supported young surgeons from developing countries to train abroad and learn skills that can be applied in their own countries, but has also promoted global unity among these orthopedists. It has supported training in methods of research and in techniques for the better management of orthopaedic services to the public. The Foundation has promoted unity among orthopaedic surgeons from around the world. This year’s 3-day congress promises to be an improvement on last year’s event which was held in Rome.
