The Foundation of Orthopaedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) is a non-profit organization, established in 1998 in the United States and Ghana by Dr Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, Chief of the Scoliosis Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill-Cornell Medical College of Cornell University.
FOCOS’s mission is to provide comprehensive, affordable orthopaedic care to those who would not otherwise have access to such treatment. In particular, FOCOS seeks to enhance access to optimal surgical and non-surgical care for patients with disabling musculoskeletal disorders including complex spine deformities and pediatric orthopaedic problems in underserved regions. It began as a dream of the founder to see the best care reach the underserved in his native country, Ghana and the sub-Saharan region.
The Trust Hospital provided the initial outpatient facility for FOCOS consultants to see patients who needed orthopaedic treatment between 1998 and 2004. Two to three times per year, Dr Boachie and a team made up of both local and international volunteers offered treatment and performed surgeries at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).
This medical outreach program was sustained mainly through fundraising with donations in both cash and in kind. In 2004, FOCOS was able, through donations, to open the FOCOS Clinic in East-Legon, Accra, named Watson House, after the major donor and in 2007, FOCOS fundraising efforts were complemented by Ghana government grant assistance.
An annual fundraising gala is organized in the USA and FOCOS has received indispensable assistance from over 1,200 donors who have so far contributed close to 10 million US Dollars ($10,000,000) to date. Thanks to this public-private initiative, FOCOS has been able to use the funds to support patients and the construction of the current FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, here in Pantang, Accra.
The FOCOS Clinic in East-Legon relocated to the new ultra modern 50 bed orthopaedic hospital in June, 2011. The FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital is currently fully accredited to operate both inpatient and outpatient departments. Some facilities on campus include state of the art Radiology, Laboratory and Physiotherapy departments and the services offered include Emergency, Ambulance, Pharmacy, Cafeteria and Laundry services.
Since its inception in 1998, FOCOS has treated over 26,000 local and international patients and performed over 2,400 surgeries including complex spine, total knee and hip replacements.
FOCOS has hosted over 500 international volunteers from all over the world including surgeons, nurses and physical therapists. We at FOCOS take this opportunity to thank all patients, volunteers, local medical partners, donors, sponsors and all others who have contributed in any way to help make the FOCOS story a success. May you be richly blessed.
